Porsche announcement from a few months ago is now a reality. Boxster and Cayman are getting new appendix to their name, a model number 718. The first in line is a brand new Porsche 718 Boxster, followed by 718 Boxster S. The main difference between Cayman and Boxster is in the roof. While Cayman is a coupe version, the Boxster has a soft-top.
With number 718 Porsche revive the tradition of mid-engined 4-cylinder racing cars from the fifties and sixties, and at the same time adds the missing number to the naming, as we are used to in models 911 Carrera, 918 and 919 Spyder Hybrid.
Porsche 718 Boxster engine and performance
Designers refreshed all the elements of Porsche 718 Boxster except the windscreen and convertible top.
Under the hood of Porsche 718 Boxster lies 2.0-liter, turbo charged, four-cylinder petrol boxer engine, which develops 300 horsepower and maximum torque of 380 Nm. 718 Boxster S is equipped with a 2.5-liter engine, which, thanks to the turbocharger with variable geometry, develops 350 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque. Both are around 35 hp more powerful than the current Boxster and Boxster S, but they also consume around 13 percent less fuel.
Increased maximum power and retuned suspension is reflected in a 4.7-second acceleration to 100 kilometers per hour in case of 718 Boxster and 4.2 seconds for the 718 Boxster S, around half a second faster than before.
The six-speed manual transmission comes as standard, with optional PDK (“The Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe” or “Porsche dual-clutch transmission”) which includes virtual fuel saving ratios.
Refreshed design, new dashboard
New 718 Boxster 2016 is getting a new dashboard with the latest Porsche infotainment system as standard equipment
718 Boxster has received a significant design refresh, as the designers dealt with virtually all elements except the windscreen and convertible top. The interior is given a new dashboard and the latest Porsche Communication Management infotainment system with a touchscreen comes as standard.
2016 Porsche 718 Boxster price and release dates
The new 2016 Porsche 718 Boxster will come to US dealerships in June 2016 with a base price of 56,000 USD for 718 Boxster and 68,400 USD for 718 Boxster S.
In Europe, the market launch is planned for April 30th 2016. The German price starts at 53,600 EUR for 718 Boxster and 66,100 EUR for the S version.
In both cases we are looking at the price increase of around 6-7 percent over previous (current) Boxster.
