2016 Skoda Superb Combi

Skoda Superb Combi 2.0 TDI DSG. The space inside space, surrounded by a lot of equipment and practicality. The third generation Skoda Superb 2016 is probably the most attractive Skoda Estate model so far. As well as most spacious and technically sophisticated. Superb Combi is a very good Skoda. Although it is not one of the more affordable ones anymore, at least this one.

It is difficult to pre-judge whether the buyers choose Skoda Superb Combi because they need a lot of cargo space, or because they are just fans of the wagon body shape. But in any case they are not disappointed. Especially if they previously owned one of the Superb’s second (or even first) generation.

Anyway, let’s talk about 2016 Skoda Superb’s luggage compartment first. Taken as a whole and not just through a liter capacity, it is one of the main virtues of the third generation Superb 2016. No other rival cannot compete with it. In addition, the Superb Combi is far from a delivery van, and may, depending on the equipment and the paint combination, be an excellent business vehicle. Skoda also doesn’t leave very much to be desired as far as the accessories are concerned. However, the price is no longer among the lowest because of that. The reviewed vehicle can easily cost you 40,000 euros or more.

Skoda Superb’s superb luggage compartment.

Make it one way or another, the 2-liter diesel engine is also an excellent part of this 2016 Superb Combi. It is very economical in the relaxed cruise (fuel consumption can drop well below six liters per 100 kilometers), but is also quite lively and sporty if needed. Even so sporty, that it implies on the choice of all-wheel drive, which additionally means better security, especially in the winter time.

Skoda Superb Combi: the sustained way through two generations to the popular business car

Year 2001 and the first generation of Skoda Superb. We took it with a lot of reserve. What is this? An extended Passat, stripped of the equipment and with the lack of design skills? However, the Superb has diligently followed the unwritten rules of the seven-year cycle of car models. We were more and more persuaded by Superb’s quality and roomines (especially in 2009 with the Superb second generation, when Combi was introduced). And he steadily gained confidence.

It has become a company vehicle to the many successful smaller business bosses in Western Europe.

More beautiful and elegant than the Volkswagen Passat?

Last year’s third generation Superb is already based on the latest Volkswagen Group platform (MQB) which is an extra confirmation that designers are on the right track. Today, the Superb 2016 is stylish, much more elegant than it was, nobody can deny that. And maybe Superb had already become more beautiful and elegant than the Volkswagen Passat? What do you think? Matter of personal taste, of course. But even the fact that we are considering about such a statement tells a lot about Skoda Superb Combi evolution. After all, the sales figures of this Czech car manufacturer speak for themselves.

The luggage compartment: big, with a lot of small solutions for increased usability

Skoda Superb Combi has the boot capacity up to 1,950 litres – best in class.

The luggage compartment in the Škoda Superb Combi has the basis of 660 liters. Folding the rear seats extends the volume to a huge 1,950 liters, which is an achievement no competitor can overcome.

And what are those usable solutions mentioned before? Well, where to begin? Waterproof umbrella compartment. Power Tailgate or opening and closing the tailgate with the push of a button. At the top of the roller shutter it has six hooks for bags. 12-volt power outlet and light, which can be extracted and used as a removable LED flashlight.  Two extra LEDs on the tailgate. Easily accessible lever for triggering backrests. The backrest is divided into the 40:60 ratio. And here appears the only disadvantage: in the extended trunk arises unfortunate step, which prevents luggage to be simply pushed toward the front seat.

Very large interior space in all directions, while knee room in the back really stand out

2016 Skoda Superb Combi spacious interior.

The interior is spacious. It offers a sense of airiness. There has been progress in the cabin illumination. Blue light strip on the door panels and dashboard is eye pleasing and unobtrusive at night, but bright enough to help you find things in the cabin.

The compartment between the front seats is large enough and well lit (and coated, and cooled), and the interior lighting in general is rich and effective. The same applies to the amount and usefulness of extra storage compartments for smaller stuff. The general feeling of the whole armature nevertheless shows that designers needed to save a few euros at the expense of better quality.

Traveling at 200 kilometers per hour in Skoda Superb Combi 2.0 TDI DSG: stress-free for mechanics and passengers

Canton sound system is commendable and is more than just decently playing music content. Perhaps even better is general internal acoustics. Superb Combi 2016 is quiet and pleasant enough up to the maximum speed, without any unnecessary vibrations. Also, because of the engine. A trip with 200 and more kilometers per hour on the highway (where allowed) is stress-free for the engine, but also for car body (torsional rigidity, aerodynamics), chassis (position, control), and consequently also for the driver and passengers.

The option of setting the driving dynamics is useful. Four preset modes and adjustable fifth, offering a small but well-detectable differences as a combination of different adaptive chassis settings (DCC), the steering wheel, the drive (motor), air conditioning and cruise control. What stands out is ECO mode, in which the driver needs to be more patient in mechanics response. But at ecological driving that is the way it should be.

400 Nm of torque to the front wheels showing the desire for four-wheel drive

Superb Combi 2016 is quiet and pleasant enough, even at maximum speed.

Many horsepower, and above all a lot of torque, especially in a sports driving dynamics setting, invite the driver to a more sporty driving. We have no comment when traveling on a motorway. But on the winding road we must take into account the relatively long wheelbase, the distribution of weight and 400 Nm of torque to the front wheels. In just a little slippery asphalt condition it seems there is too much torque to just two (front) wheels, so we recommend the four-wheel drive version.

For more than a ton and a half of total weight and 190 horsepower can be very economical

2.0-liter diesel engine, 190 horsepower, 400 Nm of torque

The combination of urban, suburban and motorway “real life” driving  will cost you a good six to nine liters of diesel per hundred kilometers, depending on the weight of your right leg. Excessive ecologist will be able to spend even less, but it seems that the cost of such a powerful engine and breaking the low consumption records is not very logical. Unless the driver like a lot of reserve under the hood just in case.
