Koenigsegg One:1 totaled – 2.8 million EUR damage

Koenigsegg One:1 crash, Nürburgring Nordschleife

A few days ago, one of the test drivers of the Swedish super-car Koenigsegg One:1 flew off the road and completely destroyed the vehicle. It all happened on the Nürburgring in Germany. The driver is thankfully OK. However, it could be the most expensive single car crash in the history of this famous race track.

Koenigsegg One:1 fleet now smaller by 14%

This is one of the seven units produced in Koenigsegg and that was part of a test fleet. As reported from Sweden, the investigation on how the incident occurred is already in full progress and whether the reason for the crash lies in possible defect of the car. That braking line on the asphalt is a little suspicious, isn’t it?

According to reports from local photographers, hunting for spy shots of the masked upcoming cars, the test driver approached the turn much too quickly, followed by braking, locking tires and the inevitable collision into the guardrail. The aforementioned super car cost about 2.8 million euros on the market.

The good news: Koenigsegg has confirmed it will rebuild the car completely.

Update (25. July): At 170 km/h, this happened…

After the accident, Koenigsegg explained in detail what went wrong, while announcing the good news that despite the damage, the car it can be completely renovated. The reason is the ABS sensor, which suddenly blocked the front pair of wheels at the speed of 170 km/h. The car was catapulted from the track in a straight line and crashed into the fence at a speed of 110 km/h. Unlucky One:1 flew 22 meters through the air and made a 180 degrees rotation before it landed on the left rear wheel.

Once it crashed on the groud, the rear left part caught fire, because carbon fibers panel touched the hot exhaust. The fire was quickly extinguished by a test driver himself, who survived the collision unscathed and released from the hospital the same day. All due to excellent safety systems.

At Koenigsegg they explained that before the crash, the car warned the driver that there is something wrong with the ABS through a small warning light. However, the driver could not immediately see the light during fast driving because it is located on the center console. He also couldn’t notice the problem while braking without the ABS intervention. In a demanding part of the track, called Fuchsröhre, however, thongs got complicated…

Totaled? No way!

Although the car looks very damaged on the photographs after the accident, and we already guessed about the most expensive accident in the history of the Nürburgring, the carbon monocoque chassis remained intact. There was no damage to the engine, gearbox and other expensive systems. Even all the liquids remained where they should. The car will be completely restored, with improvements in the software that will assure a similar event does not occur again.

Koenigsegg One:1

Koenigsegg One:1

The One:1 was introduced by Koenigsegg in 2014 at the Geneva Motor Show

. A total of 7 examples, including one prototype, were made during 2014 and 2015. All the cars are hand built by craftsmen in Sweden.

Koenigsegg One:1 managed to achieve the dream hp-to-weight ratio of 1:1, especially given the fact that this is fully road legal car. The similar achievement succeeded recently presented project AM-RB 001.

The Koenigsegg One:1 max power amounts to 1,361 PS, equivalent to 1 MW (the first production car that achieved this number). Maximum torque is 1,371 Nm at 6,000 rpm, while over 1,000 Nm available between 3,000 and 8,000 rpm.

The acceleration of Koenigsegg One:1 is also incredible. From 0-100 kilometers per hour in 2.8 seconds, 0-200 in 6.6 seconds, 0-300 in 11.9 seconds and 0-400 km/h in approximately 20 seconds. The theoretical top speed is around 451 kilometers per hour (280 mph).
